JBL Loudspeakers were formed in 1946 by James B Lansing in Los Angeles, but the factory was based in San Marcos, San Diego. The Altec Lansing monicur went through some difficult times in its infancy and in 1948 when James Lansing died William Thomas, a part owner secured the full rights from Mr Lansing's wife to become sole owner.
